The Massachusetts healthcare system is widely regarded as an example of how to provide universal coverage and keep costs low. While this article will not attempt to debate the merits of our state's attempts at healthcare reform, we are interested ensuring the general public is aware of the extent of compensation our local non-profit health insurers pay their top executives.
At the close of 2008, 51 executives at 6 of Massachusetts' Non Profit Health Insurance companies made over $37,379,626 in salaries, bonuses, and all other compensation. Nearly 40% of that figure went to 14 executives at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
Each year all health insurers based in Massachusetts are required to file a number of exhibits with the Division of Insurance. You can get your copy at the Department of Public Records, One South Station, Boston, MA 02110. Or you can download a copy by clicking on one of the links next to each chart below. While your there, if your enrolled in one of these insurance plans we'd like to hear your thoughts and concerns about compensation. Over the next few weeks, I will also post a copy of each company's "Annual Report" with a summary of their gross earnings, margins and total members for comparson.
