If I apply for the extra help with Part D and are approved, will I automatically be enrolled in a prescription drug plan?

Yes, if you don't enroll on your own the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will send you a letter that will tell you which plan you have been enrolled in and how to change plans.

However, if you delay your enrollment you could lose months of benefits and you may not get the plan that is best for you if you wait to be automatically enrolled.

If you apply for extra help you will be given an opportunity to select a Part D plan on your own. However, if you wait - Medicare will send you a letter acknowledging that you will be automatically enrolled in a Medicare Part D Plan. You can find a Part D Prescription Drug plan by visiting www.Medicare.gov, entering your zip code and find a plan in your area.

Recommendations:
1. Check to see if the Copays for Retail and Pharmacy are cheaper than the retail cost of your drug. If the copays are more expensive than the cost of the drug, choose another plan.
2. Check to see if the premium you pay each month will return value through inexpensive copays. Remember, your copay should save you money - a lot of money.
3. Check to see if the plan requires a deductible. This is the amount you pay before coverage begins. Again if your drugs are cheap, the plan will make you pay the full cost of the drug until the deductible is met.
4. Finally, if you qualify for extra help you may get a significantly reduced premium and copay. Your low income could help provide valuable prescription drug coverage at little or no cost.

This is a great program and I encourage you to take advantage of these subsidies.
